about

It never rains, it pours! the closing concert of 2019 BIFEM was festival favourite, the Argonaut String Quartet. While outside a storm was brewing, it wasn't until track 3 of this live recording that the weight and pressure of the rain became apparent - but what great timing! natur3 adding its own noisy voice into the BIFEM debut of Chicago-based composer and improviser Katherine Young's Slam Creak Bzzz - in a concert of four metaphysical peregrinations that reimagined the string quartet,
all of which were Australian premieres. Alvin Lucier’s Vespers, received its Australian premiere fifty years after its composition, as the quartet drew on the historic Capital itself in an exploration of space and time. Istanbul-based composer Deniz Nurhat was another BIFEM début with their work Kaamos. As the sun set on this seventh edition of BIFEM, audiences had the rare opportunity to experience a live performance of the legendary US composer Robert Ashley’s String Quartet Describing the Motions of Large Real Bodies.
