With his remarkable ‘jazz quartet’ cycle, the work of Hamburg composer Alexander Schubert was heard for the first time in Australia at 2015 BIFEM, and the first time anywhere as a fully realised performance of all four movements. Fashioned around broad quasi-citations, Schubert avoids all trappings of cliché and pastiche through superb craft and an ear for wit and whimsy. That the Superimpose Cycle is a quartet for seven players highlights the playfulness of this multi-award-winning composer.
